Safer Internet Day 2016
MTN, the official partner in Cyprus for Safer Internet Day, transformed this year’s event into a major student festivity at the “Filoxenia” Conference Hall on Tuesday, 9th of February.
The event was organized within the frame of the Cypriot Institute for Internet Safety CyberEthics, which is co-funded by the EU program, Connecting Europe Facility. The main organizer was MTN with additional co-organisers the CNTI, the Pancyprian Coordinative Committee for Protection and Welfare of Children, the Youth Board of Cyprus and the Cyprus Police.
Over a thousand guests including pupils, student's teachers and parents, enjoyed the event which adopted the international slogan for 2016, “Play your Part for a Better Internet”.
During the event the guests were informed about matters that had to do with skills, avoiding dangers as well as the positive use of the internet.
The day included speeches and presentations from experienced speakers from Greece and Cyprus, useful information and valuable conclusions, music, art, high tech displays, all presented by a delightful Sotiris Kalivatsis, the beloved Greek actor who was the day’s host. All these factors contributed to hundreds of happy faces at the end of the day, with all obtaining a beneficial and educational experience.
• The well-established Greek professor of psychology, Dr. Georgios Floros gave precious advice relating to internet browsing.
• Dr. Antonis Hajiantonis, an IT engineer from CyRIC talked about coding and the digital skills focusing on real life superheroes.
• Professor Stelios Ktoras shared true stories of children and parents.
• Springers, an awarded youth team told their peers how they managed to gain internet success.
• The amazing “navigator” of the entire program, Sotiris Kalivatsis, spread the joy and excitement that distinguishes him, to all attendees.
The host also presented iWhiz, the innovative game/app for mobile devices that was developed by MTN in collaboration with the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, and the Institute of neuroscience and technology. The quiz-type game is addressed to children attending first grade High School until second grade of Senior High School with the main purpose to promote the correct use of the Internet through various related questions that students have to answer. This in an effort to make the Internet better and safer for them and everyone else.
Transportation of the pupils from all cities in Cyprus was arranged by the organisers and upon arrival at the venue, the students were entitled to free breakfast and a goody-bag full of interesting gifts.
A series of parallel activities were setup in the outside area of the main conference hall which students flooded to witness some very interesting and interactive technological exhibits.
MTN’s CEO, Mr. Philip Van Dalsen, in his welcoming speech emphasized that: “Here at MTN we believe that technology can change our lives towards the best. The internet provides endless opportunities on learning, working, communicating and entertainment. We strongly believe that you, the children will use it smarter and better that us, to find solutions for problems that the previous generation left unanswered”.
The Safer Internet Day is celebrated annually all over Europe. The goal is to educate students and teenagers on safer browsing but also to help establish a better internet for future European citizens.
