SAVE THE DATE – SAFER INTERNET DAY 2011

The 8th edition of Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on 8 February 2011 in more than 60 countries across the world and this year we invite you to discover through the theme “virtual lives” just how your real safe survives the online experience.

In Europe and beyond, thousands of activities will be organised by national Safer Internet Day committees to reflect on the way people present themselves on the web in spaces ranging from social networks and dating sites to online role-playing games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft. Staying online and being connected, whatever the circumstances, has indeed become critical for today’s youngsters, and not being connected frequently means social exclusion.

How do people shape their online identity? What is the social impact of their virtual identities on real life? In what ways is there a discrepancy between people’s identity in real life and what they show online? All of these questions will be at the heart of Safer Internet Day actions.

The 30 national centres in the Insafe network and partners in more than 35 countries will bring young people and adults together in local, regional, national and online events all around the world to reflect on these issues. Join us in a “real” celebration of our virtual lives in the SID fair, by registering online or contacting your national awareness centre or SID committee. A video clip has been created in all official EU languages. Watch the clip and find further information about the activities being organised in your country through the Insafe website at http://saferinternetday.org. And don’t forget, “Internet, it’s more than a game, it’s your life!”
